Olivier Garraud is a French contemporary artist who, through his drawing practice, explores structures of power and the contradictions of a society that is both democratic and unequal. His work examines how dominant narratives shape our representations and condition our behaviors, revealing the gap between declared principles and lived realities.
A graduate of the École des Beaux-Arts in Nantes, he has devoted himself since 2016 to L’Office du dessin, an ongoing series based on the systematic use of geometric tools on graph paper. This methodological framework allows him to create images in which text and form respond to one another. By playing with apparent simplicity, he produces works that are immediately readable and striking. The directness of the drawing, combined with the force of language, anchors his work in a deliberately critical strategy. He often uses antiphrasis and other rhetorical devices to deconstruct the way language is instrumentalized by power.
Drawing from popular culture, current events, and the social sciences, he explores how political and economic structures influence our perception of the world and constrain collective imagination. His drawings challenge official narratives and systems of authority, exposing how imposed discourses shape our relationship to reality.
